Originally slated for deployment against British forces in Boston Harbor, the Turtle had to be relocated when the British fleet shifted its operations to New York City. Unable to secure the explosive charge, Lee was forced to abort the mission. He released the powder magazine, which drifted away into the harbor before detonating harmlessly.
